Tip: What journalists can do when experiencing online attacks

Getting trolled or harassed online can be a truly traumatic experience for journalists; it can even lead to self-censorship or quitting online platforms altogether.

But you are not alone nor powerless. To help you counter online attackers, journalist Megan Clement rounded up best pieces of advice from the 11th GIJC conference in this article.

“Journalists should not have to hold on to materials that they may understandably find upsetting or triggering, but newsroom managers should keep files on the threats that journalists have received. This allows them to keep track of potential patterns and repeat offenders without exposing reporters on the front line to further trauma,” Clement wrote.
